FORT THOMPSON SCHOOL

(Picture unavailable)

Gravelly Valley - The schoolhouse was in an open glade about two miles over the mountain. From the top of the mountain to Gravelly Valley, the road was fair and followed the ridge. Fort Thompson was south of  E. A. Smith and possibly this was where the Fort Thompson School was located. Joseph Smith was an uncle of E. A. Smith and lived at first at the E. A. Smith place. He had a large family of girls, and they all went to the Fort Thompson School. The school was in existence for only four or five years, from about 1880 to 1884-5, and was created mostly for sawmill families. About a dozen children were in attendance. The name came from the fact that the cabin in which the school was held looked like a fort. No records have been found for this school.
